At least the body covers the front shock towers and shocks, where the buggy, they're just hangin' out there in front, begging for damage. IMO, you did good going for a stadium truck over a buggy for bashing. (Location of body mount holes might be different.) Yeah, you're going to find a LOT more aftermarket parts for the Rustler than the HPI. But if you make it too loose, you'll risk stripping those 48-pitch gear teeth.Īnd as for the body, if you like the Firestorm lid, you could probably get one and slap it on the Rustler. You don't want it too tight, or you'll tax the front motor bearing. But it works great in my 10th-scale 4wd truggy.) BE VERY CAREFUL setting your gear mesh. (I had a 5700kv Castle 4-pole in my 2wd Evader. You could go up to 4300kv if you wanted more speed, but I wouldn't go any higher than that. Well, that and the exorbitant price) They seem to have remedied that issue with the Sidewinder 3.ģ800KV is probably about right for your Rustler. (Probably the reason that model didn't sell. I believe they used the same ESC in the Evader Brushless. Yeah, my buddy and I both had Sidewinder 2 ESCs that crapped out. Geez, who uses bushings any more these days? The only brass bushing I've seen in modern cars is sometimes in the steering bellcrank.

Plus I get a spare motor and ESC for my son's Slash In the end, I know I am going to need parts and support, so Rustler wins out. I have to say I liked the looks of the Firestorm a heck of whole lot better than the Rustler, but that will be changed down the road. Again, not my take, just reporting what others told me, but the parts/accessories available for Rustler vs. My main hesitation was that a couple of retailers I talked to complained about lack of after market parts for it and their feeling that HPI just wasn't focusing on the 1/10th off road market much.

Could get the Firestorm with free shipping and no tax for under $290 for at least 2 retailers. Couple the reasonable price and nice motor with the fact that online retailers would honor coupons (HPI doesn't have the blanket Traxxas ban on coupons) and it was a pretty darn good deal. Liked the look of the motor, although the optional included gearing sounded like a heat monster! The price was pretty darn good for the quality of the stock build and the motor/ESC unit that it came with (Castle-built from what I was told). I ended up pulling the trigger on the Rustler. Give me the Reedy dark metal or at least blue. The SC + (at TowerHobbies and another online store) had a 5mm shaft (instead of 1/8") which is reporter by Tower to not work well with 48 pitch gears. The Sidewinder SCT speed controls.I haven't heard anything bad about them, but just keep in mind the shaft choice with the 3800kv motor in the Sidewinder SCT combos.Spot on advice for anyone lurking/searching after-the-fact. Castle's Sidewinder ESCs had some little hiccups years back if I recall correctly, and Castle has now got things right again with the Sidewinder 3 that are out there. I'm not a fan of the green, but that's beside the point. But which ESC set up? There are a few (SC, SCT, ?). For the Sidewinder, I think the 3800 works best for me. For the Sidewinder, is it a straight drop in, or do I need some extra parts? Will stock gearing work? I am not planning on running anything more than LiPO 2s on it.ĥ. (hyper links are great!) for what I will need?Ĥ. What else? Anyone care to share brands, part #s, retailers, etc.

I know that there are some upgrades on the stock Rustler set up that I should do out of the box with a brushless upgrade, like bearings and aluminum cambers.

Another pro with the Sidewinder upgrade over VXL is that I get a spare ESC and motor for my son's slash. I looked at specs and only thing I saw upgraded besides motor and ESC on the Rustler VXL were bearings for bushings, and heavy duty turnbuckles. For the money, I am thinking that a Castle sidewinder 3800 kv brushless will be a better upgrade than a Rustler VXL, and cheaper. If there is another stadium truck or another style/model I should look at, let me know.Ģ. We will mostly be on short grass, local dirt tracks, maybe a bit of asphalt here or there (but not enough to consider it in the purchase question).ġ. I looked at buggies and while I was interested, the feedback I read lead me to believe that they may be too fragile for me. Want something a bit away from SCT style, but still bashable if necessary. I want something a little different, and Rustler seems like top option currently.

Bought it with intention to pass along to my son if he could handle it. I currently own a slash 2x4, stock with Titan motor.
